What we’re hearing…

People are inspired by municipal elections right here in Helena and nationwide. Campaigns of particular note are New York mayoral race, Virginia’s gubernatorial race, and Kalispell. People are excited to see a new generation of leaders stepping up and finding success.
There are many people that have been struggling lately. There are aging parents, struggling businesses, COVID, and sick kiddos. Politics is not always top of mind, even for those of us who are actively involved. Finding ways for people to give what they can, when they can, to defend our democracy will be key to our success.
Affordability is top of minds for many. For that reason, this article caught my eye and provides an important directive for candidates like myself. People want more than promises. People want policies that work. When asked about what I will do about affordability, I have to be honest with people that Montana is headed into another deficit in 2027. What I will do is make sure that we don’t let just one factor (achem, property taxes) have all the limelight. We need to address fairness in property, income, and other potential tax proposals. It’s no secret that there are people that would like Montana to have a sales tax. I disagree. A sales tax is a regressive tax and we must do whatever we can to hold the line against putting Montana on that downhill trajectory.

This week, the combination of Trump’s 90 minute “interview” and Troy Downing’s town hall (where he dismissed the impact for federal policy on Montana’s producers and claimed federal policy would have a “zero or deminimus” impact on Montana), I was reeling a bit regarding just how OUT OF TOUCH our republican leadership is these days.

What we’re doing…

Celebrating Veteran’s Day with the Magpie Drummers!
This week I was on the doors and on the phone, pulling together my campaign team and raising the money I need to reach voters.
Fundraising is by far the most frustrating aspect of being involved in politics. Access to funding is often a barrier for new candidates. So, we know that we will need to leverage every dollar with local volunteer hours to win with the grassroots. Community support for this campaign is incredibly strong so far and we’ve only just begun.
I spoke with Helena organizing legends in person and on the phone this week who said they had not been contacted by a political candidate in YEARS (yes, you hear that right. What an opportunity). We have so much talent in this community and I look forward to plugging people into the campaign and during eight years in the Montana Senate.

As a proud member of Helena’s urban Native community, alongside many Indigenous people from across the U.S. who now call Montana home, I am committed to lifting up Indigenous voices and advancing the priorities of our urban Native neighbors.

What we’re cooking…

Soup season is here and as I ramp up campaign activities for the end of the year, making a Sunday batch of soup for my family and our friends can help keep us healthy and going all week long. Consider making homemade veggie stock for this. It’s SOOOO worth it. After learning about the added depth of flavor from homemade stock, I started a practice of saving veggie scraps (garlic and onion ends, carrots, herbs, cauliflower stems, etc.) in a zip lock bag throughout the week and using my instant pot for a 30 min quick broth. It’s easier than you think with less food and packaging waste than prepared stock options.

I’m running because I know the Montana way of life we love is under threat and our future is on the line. As a long time SD 41 resident, mother, attorney, community leader, small business owner, and organizer, I know I am the best person for the job.
